V textu je tematizována otázka, proč sloveso muset v kombinaci s bezagentními infinitivy vyjadřuje méně často root modalitu než stejné sloveso v kombinaci s agentivními infinitivy. Hlavním důvodem je nejspíše to, že pokud sloveso muset vyjadřuje deontickou modalitu, lze jej kombinovat jen s infinitivy, které implikují agens. Dalším důvodem může být to, že význam nutné podmínky, který je těmito konstrukcemi vyjadřován běžně, nemůže být (jednoduše) vyjádřen minulými formami slovesa muset, pravděpodobně kvůli implikaci realizovanosti děje s těmito formami asociované. V textu se rovněž poukazuje na to, že root významy sledovaných konstrukcí nejsou příliš vzdálené od jejich významů epistemických.

The paper deals with the question why the verb muset in combination with non-agentive infinitives expresses less often root modality than the same verb in combination with agentive verbs. Presumably, the main reason lies in the fact that if the verb muset expresses deontic modality it can only be combined with infinitives implying an agent. The second reason might lie in the fact that the meaning of necessary condition which is quite common for these constructions cannot be (easily) expressed with past forms of the verb muset, (presumably) due to actuality implicature triggered by these forms. The paper also shows that root modal meanings of constructions in question are not too distant from epistemic modal meanings.
