This is an interesting book which concentrates on a relatively narrow, but certainly important and unfortunately often neglected topic of identifiability in statistical (and generic mathematical) models. Compared to what I expected from the title, the book is rather easy to read. In principle, it is certainly accessible to a wide audience, from students to practicing statisticians, or even to quantitatively oriented non-statistical scientists. The statistical and mathematical prerequisites are not huge. However, there is some imbalance in what is assumed on the reader’s side when going from chapter to chapter. Assumed knowledge increases toward the end of the book. In fact, some chapters are less self-contained than others. State space, in both continuous and discrete time, serves as examples.
