The use of amino acids as monomers for production of polyamides is well known and provides broad scope of products with wide range of applications. Amino esters are alternative monomers to produce these high value-added polymers on the basis of renewable resources. For example, the alternative production process for Rilsan®, which is a polyamide with 11 carbon atoms (PA11) involves hydrogenation of methyl-10-cyano-9-decenoate, which can be synthesized from renewable sources such as vegetable oils. The hydrogenation of nitriles to amines on various heterogeneous catalysts has been discussed in several studies, however, in this study of a nitrile ester hydrogenation, there are additional challenges. For example, in the products that are intended to be used as monomers, a low content of monofunctional molecules is required. The chapter, therefore, reviews the nitrile ester hydrogenation processes and discuss the influence of parameters such as catalyst type or operating conditions (temperature, hydrogen pressure and addition of ammonia) on selectivity and whole reaction mechanism pathway. The literature data is complemented by own experimental results, mathematical modeling of the reaction mechanism and determination of kinetic parameters for a particular catalyst type.
