Kniha je první samostatnou studií o Tanzanii od 80. let. Seznamuje s vývojem lidského osídlení a kultury na jejím území před jejím dočasným ovládnutím Evropany, všímá si důležité svahilské kultury a jejího fungování. Pozornost věnuje samostatnému vývoji Zanzibaru jako sídlu muslimského sultána ománské dynastie, jež byl současně až do sklonku 19. století důležitým centrem obchodu s otroky. Zvláštní kapitulu tvoří náčrt německého kolonialismu v této části Afriky, jeho soupeření s Brity a průběh první světové války, jež přinesla ovládnutí země Spojeným královstvím. Důležitou složku knihy tvoří nástin fungování mezinárodního režimu, tzv. mandátu, podřízeného nejprve Společnosti národů a následně – v podobě svěřenectví – OSN, jež ovlivnily jak vznik národně emancipačního procesu, tak průběh dekolonizace. Obsahuje i přehled dějin vztahů Československa k tomuto regionu zvláště po vzniku Tanganyiky.

The publication is the first solo study of Tanzania since the 1980s. It familiarises the reader with the outlines of the evolution of the settlement of the territory of today's Tanzania before its control by the Europeans, including the important Swahili culture and its local centres. It covers the main features of German colonialism and then, after WWI, British administration in East Africa from the late 19th century to the early 1960s. It also notices the international regime, led by League of Nations and then United nations after 1945. It also introduces the gradual evolution of the national emancipation movement, as well as an outline of post-independence domestic political developments, including the place of Tanzania in the Cold War, when it was building the specific, “African” socialism. In addition to a brief analysis of the current political situation, the book also contains an outline of the development of mutual relations with the Czech environment and the former Czechoslovakia, foremost the relations after birth of independent Tanganyika.
