Na příkladu dvou předních pražských uměleckohistorických pracovišť, Katedry dějin umění a estetiky na Filozofické fakultě UK a Ústavu pro teorii a dějiny umění ČSAV, se příspěvek pokouší tematizovat, prostřednictvím jakých strategií čelily dějiny umění v Československu dvěma zásadním hrozbám, které s sebou přineslo období tzv. normalizace. Mezi tyto hrozby patřila zejména v 70. letech 20. století teoretizace disciplíny vyvolaná politickou objednávkou ve smyslu její ovládnutí marxistickou teorií umění a likvidace studijního oboru dějin umění prostřednictvím nulových směrných čísel.

Paper attempts to discuss the strategies by which art history as a humanistic discipline faced two major threats of Communist regime in Czechoslovakia during the so called period of normalization. The threats included the Marxist theorization of the discipline brought about by political order, on the one hand, and zero guide numbers, determining the planned number of graduates for practical work that liquidated study programmes in art history at Czech universities, on the other hand. These strategies are illustrated on the example of two leading Prague academic institutions specialized in art history research – the Department of Art History and Aesthetics at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University and the Institute for Theory and History of Art of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
