The purpose of the chapter is to discuss the general tendencies of Humanist Greek poetry in the Bohemian lands from its origins to its decline. First of all, the political situation in the Bohemian lands from the founding of the University of Prague (1348) to the beginning of the early modern era is depicted, then the development of Greek studies in the early modern Bohemian lands are described, the major scholars as well as authors are mentioned and their connections, or the lack thereof, to the University of Prague are determined. Finally, by specifying the genres and metres of Humanist Greek poetry in the Bohemian lands, its character is defined and its purposes explained. A comparison is made with the Latin production in the region and, at the same time, decisive conclusions are drawn as to the frequency of Greek poems in comparison to the Latin ones. The Appendix presents some Greek poems from the Bohemian lands with translation, notes and references to ancient texts.
