The introduction gives a survey of the relevant literature and the state of current knowledge about the politicization of peasantry in the 19th century. It begins with books written on the politicization of the French countryside, the works of historians such as A. Siegfried, M. Agulhon, or E. Weber are considered paradigmatic. Then author focuses on the distinctiveness of political and socio-economic conditions under which peasants lived in East Central Europe (namely Bohemian lands, Wielkopolska, Galicia, Hungary and Romania). It seems that the laboratory for research into the politicization of the peasantry in Central Europe is Galicia, where a varied amalgam of social, ethnic and religious conditions was created.
