Late medieval chant books include inscriptions or individual sections with the co-called cantus fractus melodies that use – in opposite to the “plainchant”, cantus planus melodies – rhythmical patterns. Despite the fact that the repertory of cantus fractus makes an important part of the late-medieval and also early modern musical repertory, it still remains a field almost unexplored. In the current discurs in musicology, art history and cultural history in general, the cantus fractus repertory constitutes an extremely promising field, providing opportunity for mutual discussions and collaborative outcomes, in particular in view of general understanding of “rhythm” in the late-medieval life and arts.
