Obor OECD: Ecology
Since coniferous forests are predominant in the colder northern or alpine regions, boreal forest ecosystems are characterised by thick humus layers, low decomposition rates and strong limitations by nutrients. Furthermore, the mostly present podzol profile is characterised by strong leaching effects. As far as the soil fauna is concerned, the type of litter and humus produced by conifers is highly significant. The acid conditions prevailing in coniferous forest soils are inimical to certain groups of animals.
