We explore consequences of a fecundity-longevity trade-off on sterility virulence evolution in pathogens. Whereas the trade-off cannot prevent the evolution of full sterilization, it strongly determines the threshold efficiency of vertical transmission above which partial host sterilization evolves. Moreover, the trade-off significantly contributes to determining whether partial
host sterilization corresponds to an intermediate level of sterility virulence or to a stable dimorphism at which avirulent and highly virulent strains
coexist. Our study highlights that these effects are independent of the form of horizontal transmission and the type of density dependence in host demography and hence that the fecundity-longevity trade-off is an important player in sterility virulence evolution.
