Educational trails (ET) represent an important resource for exploring how to negotiate the meaning and heritage of a landscape. In the article, the differences between two versions of a ET dedicated to glass making in the vicinity of Lesná, which is located in the western border region of the Czech Republic, are analysed. Based on the understanding of „contact zones“ as a local forum that follows a sequence of local negotiations as defined by Richard E. Miller (1994), ETs can be viewed as a representation and materialization of contact zones. The two versions of the examined ET were built in 2000/01 and 2015. The first was designed by the municipality of Lesná, the second by the representatives of Upper Palatine Forest landscape protected area. The authors consider the tables of the ET as a materialized stage of the contact zone in the borderland. They comprise both constant and changing topics, which represent the understanding of the landscape, its history and heritage from the 2000s to the present day. Authors argue that the change in the topics and the course of the ET is interconnected both with the emergence of a new institutional actor in the region (The Landscape Protected Area) and the changes of tourist expectations.
