The cesium hafnium chloride Cs2HfCl6 (CHC) has been recently studied as a prospective material for cost effective detectors of ionizing radiation. Its high light yield up to 54 000 ph/MeV, energy resolution of 3.3 % at 662 keV, scintillation response of 4.4 us at 662 keV, and density of 3.86 g/cm3 together with its low hygroscopicity makes it a suitable candidate for scintillating applications. Two emission bands in CHC peaking at 375 and 435 nm were ascribed to CHC structure itself originating in self-trapped exciton and to Zr impurity arising from the contamination of raw HfCl4, respectively. However, luminescent mechanism and composition of the emission peak still remain unclear. In this work we deal with preparation and crystal growth of undoped CHC by vertical Bridgman method and its further characterization by the optical, luminescence, scintillating, and magnetic methods. The goal is to reveal and distinguish emission overlap of the Hf- and Zr-based emission centers.
