The heterogeneity of the angiosperm vessel network gives rise to transverse pressure gradients that redirect flow in grapevine from wide to narrow vessels, reducing the contribution of wide vessels to sap flow by 15% of the total. This result is contrary to current theory, which expects vessel flowrates to be related to vessel radius according to the Hagen-Poisseuille equation.
