Jméno Martimiani nese první česky psaná světová kronika. Popisuje děje od stvoření světa přes nejstarší židovské dějiny, trojskou válku a život Alexandra Makedonského až k založení Říma a následně uvádí životopisy římských císařů po Karla IV. a papežů po Jana XXI. Její vznik je datován na přelom 14. a 15. století či do první čtvrtiny 15. století a tradičně byla připisována rytíři Benešovi z Hořovic. Staročeský text je však dosti věrným překladem prvních kapitol německé kroniky Jacoba Twingera von Königshofen (1346–1420) a části proslulé a rozšířené latinské papežsko-císařské kroniky Martina Opavského († 1278/1279). Množství a charakter zachovaných středověkých českojazyčných rukopisů, aluze textu v dobových textech historiografického i jiného charakteru, ale především fakt, že se staročeská kronika stala roku 1488 jedním z prvních českých tisků, svědčí o její značné oblibě a popularitě, prokazatelné v celé druhé polovině 15. století. Publikace přináší vůbec poprvé kritickou edici staročeského textu, do níž byly pojaty všechny zachovalé rukopisy i text prvotisku. Edice je doprovozena statěmi popisujícími a interpretujícími tuto literární památku z pohledu kodikologického, historického a paleobohemistického.

The name Martimiani denotes the first world-chronicle written in Czech. It describes the events from the creation of the world through the oldest Jewish history, the Trojan War and the life of Alexander the Great to the foundation of Rome, and, subsequently, lists the biographies of the Roman emperors up to Charles IV. and Popes up to John XXI. Its origin dates back to the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries or to the first quarter of the 15th century and it was traditionally attributed to the knight Beneš of Hořovice. However, the Old Czech text is a fairly faithful translation of the first chapters of the German chronicle by Jacob Twinger von Königshofen (1346–1420), and a part of the famous and widespread Latin papal-imperial chronicle written by Martin Polonus († 1278/1279). The number and character of preserved medieval Czech-language manuscripts, the allusions of its text in historical even other texts but above all the fact that the Old Czech chronicle became one of the first Czech prints in 1488 prove the popularity of the chronicle during the whole 15th century. The publication contains the critical edition of the Old Czech text, in which were taken all the preserved manuscripts and the text of the incunabula. The edition is accompanied by essays describing and interpreting this literary monument from the point of view of codicology, history and Czech studies.
