From an evolutionary perspective, aging represents a decline in survival and reproductive success with increasing chronological age. Since any survival without reproduction (or inability to support the survival of relatives) is evolutionarily irrelevant, evolution of aging is rooted in the trade-offs between the costs of current reproduction and the benefits of survival for future reproductive opportunities. This article outlines the assumptions and predictions of evolutionary theories of aging, summarizes their support and discusses their main recent extensions. It also outlines those situations where current evolutionary theories of aging do not apply and provides an outlook for future research on aging from an evolutionary perspective.
