A recent breakthrough in biogas purification has shown that a thin film hydrophiliccomposite membrane can create a perm-selective water swollen barrier which is able to remove unwanted sour gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide owing to the significantly higher water solubility of the latter in comparison to methane. Simultaneously, this water– swollen membrane is able to remove carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and water vapour fro agro-biogas. A unique feature of the presented approach, distinguishing the water-swollen thinfilm composite membranes from polymeric membranes under dry conditions, is that the condensing water absorbs a significant amount of minor impurities of biogas, such as H2S and CO2. Therefore, a significant amount of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide can be successfully removed from the feed stream under mild conditions (temperature of 21 °C and pressure of 220 kPa).
