Obor OECD: Chemical process engineering
Biorefining is generally based on basic chemicals other than petrochemicals from the processing of fossil raw materials. A significant number of chemical products necessary to meet the basic needs of the whole population could not be prepared on the basis of fossil sources (e.g. unsaturated fatty acids, antibiotics, phytohormones, etc.). The carbohydrate fraction, which can be converted to some basic chemicals such as ethylene, propylene, olefins, benzene, succinic acid, butanol, lactic acid, propionic acid, serine, essential aminoacids, furfural, proline, levoglucosan, sorbitol, etc., plays a major role in biomass chemistry. Certain platform chemicals which could change the face of industrial chemistry in the near future could be obtained by biorefining processes from renewable biomass. These will be the key building blocks for the production of both commodity and specialty chemicals, otherwise extracted from crude oil.
