Důležitou součástí vědecké činnosti Archeologických ústavů AV ČR je i systematické shromažďování informací o terénních aktivitách a jejich výsledcích. Tento úkol jim byl svěřen již při založení jejich předchůdce před 100 lety. Postupně tak bylo započato a dále rozvíjeno budování odpovídajících vědeckých archivů, poskytujících potřebná data pro archeologické bádání – zprvu ve formě tištěných dokumentů, map či fotografii a již od počátku 90. let též ve formě digitálních databází. V současnosti se role ústavů na poli sběru a šíření archeologických dat pevně ukotvila, a to díky postupnému vybudování národní výzkumné infrastruktury Archeologický informační systém České republiky (AIS CR). Tento dlouhodobý projekt zajišťuje centrální evidenci, zpracování a prezentaci informací o archeologickém dědictví, které jsou nutné na jedné straně k výkonu státní správy na poli památkové péče, na druhé straně k vědeckému výzkumu a v neposlední řadě též jako zásadní zdroj informací o historické krajině pro širokou veřejnost. K tomu slouží řada služeb, aplikací a databází, které AIS CR nabízí volně k užití. Řadí tak ČR mezi vyspělé státy, kde otevřené digitální informační zdroje tvoří páteř archeologických aktivit.

The systematic collection of information about field activities and their results is an important part of the scientific activities of the Institutes of Archaeology of the CAS. They were entrusted with this task when their predecessor was established 100 years ago. Gradually, the building of adequate scientific archives, providing the necessary data for archaeological research, has been initiated and further developed, initially in the form of printed documents, maps or photographs, and since the early 1990s also in the form of digital databases. At present, the role of institutes in the field of collecting and disseminating archaeological data has become firmly established, thanks to the gradual construction of the national research infrastructure Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS CR). This long-term project ensures the central record-keeping, processing and presentation of information on archaeological heritage, which is necessary on the one hand for the state administration's performance in the field of heritage conservation, on the other hand for scientific research and, last but not least, as a vital source of information on the historical landscape for the general public. This is done by a range of services, applications and databases that AIS CR offers freely for use. It ranks the Czech Republic among developed nations, where open digital information sources form the backbone of archaeological activities.
