As a character of a theater play Diogenes first appeared in a dialogue by Hans Sachs. Many other plays followed in which this character played main or supporting role. The contribution compares various approaches to dramatizing life of the aforesaid philosopher. However, the author of the paper primarily deals with sources of a play Diogenes Cynicus redivivus (1640) by Johannes Amos Comenius and (inter alia) partly solves the question why this Czech playwright in Polish exile choose Diogenes as a hero of his school play (staged in Leszno, Greater Poland). Another question is how the author succeded in true depiction of the world of ancient Greece on the stage. The mistakes Comenius made only correspond to the level of knowledge of his time. However, the play was set apart from the other adaptations, by the author’s serious attempt to portrait the life of Diogenes as a whole, as an educative material about him. This is also the way the play was perceived by author’s contemporaries.
