Whistler mode waves have been routinely detected in the plasmapause
density gradient by different spacecraft missions (for instance,
Polar, Cluster, and Van Allen Probes). These waves can be observed
as broadband hiss and/or as discrete wave packets
of chorus-like emissions. Whistler mode waves occurring close to the
plasmapause have been discussed as principal factors
which influence the dynamics of the slot region in the radiation belts
via pitch-angle diffusion and subsequent precipitation of energetic electrons.
We investigate propagation and polarization properties of these waves
by direct spacecraft measurements in separate spatial
points and by ray tracing simulations based on these measurements.
Estimated directions of their Poynting vectors indicate that their source region
is close to the geomagnetic equatorial plane which is consistent with their
anticipated local generation by linear and nonlinear plasma instabilities,
or by nonlinear parametric interactions.
