Předmětem studie je analýza jednak stavu historiografie prusko-rakouské války z roku 1866, jednak hlubší úvaha o postavení tohoto konfliktu v českém vojenském dějepisectví i širším historickém vědomí české společnosti. Autoři se ve svých úvahách neopírají pouze o historické prameny, ale reflektují na příkladu nedávného 150. výročí prusko-rakouského konfliktu i současnou situaci v podobě laických recipientů, reenactmentu i kultury. Na tomto základě válku z roku 1866 interpretují jako klíčovou historickou událost, která se tak obecně přijímána, avšak přesto stojí stranou mainstreamu odborného historického zájmu, což kontrastuje s vnímáním a oblibou tématu u laické veřejnosti, především v regionu východních Čech. V neposlední řadě autoři upozorňují na metodologické a teoretické limity domácího pojetí studia a prezentace vojenských dějin, které se vyčleňuje jak z dominantního proudu moderního historického bádání, tak neoslovuje ani širší veřejnost jako celek.

The subject of the research is an analysis of the present state of the historiography of the Prussian-Austrian War of 1866, and a deeper reflection on the position of this conflict within the Czech military historiography and in broader historical thinking of Czech society. The authors rely not only on historical sources but also reflect the current situation on the example of the recent 150th anniversary of the Prussian-Austrian conflict (in the form of “lay recipients”, re-enactment and culture). On this basis, they interpret the War of 1866 as a key historical event, as it is widely accepted, but nevertheless it stands aside from the mainstream of professional historical interest, this fact contrasts with the vast popularity of this topic among the public, especially in the East Bohemia region. Finally, the authors draw attention to the methodological and theoretical limits of Czech the conception of research and presentation of military history, which is in a way separated from the dominant stream of modern historical research and as a whole does not appeal to the wider public.
