V páté Kavárně roku 2019 se Kryštof Koháček baví o knize Principy Politiky Benjamina Constanta s její překladatelkou a odbornicí na francouzské liberály 18 století Hanou Fořtovou. Fořtová vysvětluje, že Constant, ač v našem intelektuálním prostředí není hvězdou první velikosti, je klíčový pro reflexi francouzské revoluce a událostí po ní: vymezil hranice moderního liberálního státu a zformuloval základní liberální svobody, jež má tento stát hájit. Boháček rekapituluje hlavní body knihy a klade kritické otázky: Principy politiky systematicky pojednávají o základních tématech politického myšlení, tj. definice suverenity a jejích mezí, principy zastupitelské vlády, vztah jedince a společnosti, původ vlastnictví, soudní moc, svoboda tisku či vyznání. V čem spočívá aktuálnost Constantova pohledu? Podle Fořtové vychází z jeho schopnosti nahlédnout moderního jedince v jeho pochybnostech, úzkosti, sebestřednosti a vášních nízkého zájmu, zároveň ale jako bytost směřující k morálnímu zdokonalení a životu ve svobodě. Mezi politickými teoretiky nového století si byl Constant snad nejzřetelněji vědom toho, že moderní svět otevírá pole intelektuálních pochyb a morální nejistoty, které vyžadují při snaze dosáhnout svobody srovnatelnou odvahu jako oběti vyžadované tradičními autoritami, a že zkušenost svobody nás spíše než ke štěstí může dovést k beznaději.

In the fifth Philosophical Café of 2019, Kryštof Koháček talks about the book Principles of Politics by Benjamin Constant with Hana Fořtová, the translator and expert on French liberals of the 18th century. Fořtová explains that Constant, though not a star of first magnitude in our intellectual environment, is crucial to the reflection of the French Revolution and the events after it: it has delineated the boundaries of a modern liberal state and formulated the fundamental liberal freedoms that this state should defend. Boháček recapitulates the main points of the book and asks critical questions: The principles of politics systematically deal with the basic topics of political thinking, ie. definition of sovereignty and its limits, principles of representative government, relationship of individual and society, origin of property, judiciary, freedom of the press or religion. What is the relevance of Constant’s point of view? According to Fořtová, it is based on his ability to perceive the modern individual in his doubts, anxiety, self-centeredness and passions of low interest, but also as a person aiming for moral improvement and living in freedom. Among the political theorists of the new century, Constant was most obviously aware that the modern world was opening up a field of intellectual doubt and moral uncertainty, which, in pursuit of freedom, required comparable courage to the sacrifices required by traditional authorities, and that the experience of freedom rather than happiness can lead us to despair.
