This chapter introduces complex opto-electronic behavior of nanodiamonds when in contact with surrounding materials. It is shown by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) that surface potential of nanodiamonds is not uniform but depends on many factors such as supporting substrate material, nanodiamond surface termination, material of the probing tip or a water layer adsorbed on nanodiamonds. Special attention is devoted to practical aspects and methodology of the KPFM measurement of nanodiamonds and nanoobjects in general. The KPFM serves here as a nanoscopic tool for investigation of a local charge exchange between the nanodiamonds and surroundings. It is shown that the charging ability of nanodiamonds influences some of their macroscopic physical properties such as photoluminescence, secondary electron emission and photovoltage.
