In this article we explore the potential of the analysis based on quantification of the orientation of components of the ceramic body to distinguish between the two basic families of hand-building techniques: coiling and slab-building. The presented experimental research is anchored in the context of Early Neolithic pottery manufacture in Central Europe. The results show that an interpretation of pottery forming cannot be simplified to effects of basic forming forces which define the techniques. We demonstrated that with use of the presented methodology we can trace basic trends in the evolution of pottery forming techniques on the Early Neolithic settlement in Bylany (the Czech Republic).
