We have investigated sources of unusually large genomes within Hesperis clade of Brassicaceae. We have found proliferated long terminal repeats based on analysis of genomic data. The genome expansion was compensate by purging of transposable elements in ephemeral and annual species. The amplification versus purging of transposable elements and tandem repeats impacted the chromosomal architecture of the Hesperis-clade species.
