Dějiny moderní továrny, ve které se snoubily vysoké technické a sociální nároky, jsou předmětem této knihy. Vznik továrny nebyl jednorázový akt odehrávající se v řádu měsíců a let, nýbrž několik desetiletí trvající proces, během kterého se průmyslníci, inženýři, architekti, státní úředníci i dělničtí předáci naučili ovládat prostor. Nová ekonomie prostoru zahrnovala utilitaristické, racionální a ekonomické využívání pozemků a budov, které byly primárně podřízeny výrobním účelům. Jejich estetický, reprezentativní a náboženský význam se stal druhotným. S továrnami byla spojována očekávání na vytvoření nových pracovních míst, zvýšení prosperity země i morální obrodu, odstranění zahálky a nečinnosti. Továrny proměňovaly ekonomické, sociální i politické struktury. Patřily mezi hlavní dominanty krajiny. Změnily pracovní a životní návyky většiny obyvatelstva. V továrnách trávili její zaměstnanci většinu času: staly se jejich novým domovem.

The subject of this book is the history of a modern factory, where technology and social issues were reconciled. The book deals with the advent of a modern textile mill, where ideas about economic, technological, and social progress were put into practice. A textile mill’s relatively low material and technological demands (in comparison with other industrial factories) led to a textile mill boom in the Bohemian lands in the second half of the nineteenth century. The mills were established anywhere with appropriate conditions for installing spinning machines and a suitable source of energy (at first that meant nearby rivers). The massive construction of textile mills, often in sleepy corners of the empire’s periphery, contributed to changes in the local social structure, influenced the shape of small towns, and determined the appearance of the landscape for many decades.
