Sample preparation is a crucial step in any bioanalytical workflow. Electromembrane extraction (EME) is one of the most recently reported liquid phase microextraction techniques and was first described in 2006. In this contribution, EME literature was reviewed with special emphasis on recent mass transfer theory, how this theory affects method development and different technical EME configurations.
