Despite the paramount importance of obtaining adult worms for correct taxonomic identification using both morphological and molecular analyses, thorough fecal washing and helminth collection is unfortunately overlooked in many parasitological studies of non-human primates. It is highly recommended that each parasitological examination of preserved fecal samples begins with a search for larger larvae and adult nematodes. During this step, the fixed sample is strained through gauze (the first step in flotation, sedimentation and other coproscopic procedures), wherein small nematodes become trapped in the gauze fibers and can be subsequently recovered by washing the gauze using set of strainers - fecal washing method.
