Fibre lasers incorporating Bragg grating mirrors inscribed directly into the active fibre, hereinafter referred to as monolithic fibre lasers, are of great interest thanks to the simpler resonator design. The elimination of fibre splices between the active and passive fibres that would otherwise incorporate the fibre Bragg grating, and which could lead to system breakdown, is a significant advantage. In order to build such monolithic fibre laser configurations, different methods for FBG inscription have been reported in the open literature, including phase mask inscription using UV light or fs lasers in deep UV light, visible and IR spectrum, and by point-by-point technique with IR fs radiation. In this paper, we present our preliminary results for FBG inscription in an erbium and ytterbium co-doped fibre using the direct-write, plane-by-plane femtosecond laser inscription method, which allows for complete spatial control of the refractive index change in the fibre core, and the characterization of the resulting fibre laser
