Výstava poprvé komplexně představila téměř neznámý a dosud nevystavený soubor fotografií Josefa Sudka (1896–1976) z roku 1945 dokumentující škody, které v Praze napáchala druhá světová válka. Soubor zahrnuje bezmála čtyři stovky snímků, které zachycují zničené kulturní památky hlavního města a změněnou městskou krajinu. Fotografie byly nalezeny a zhodnoceny až díky komplexnímu zpracování části Sudkovy pozůstalosti pozitivů a negativů uložených v Ústavu dějin umění AV ČR, a to v rámci projektu NAKI II. Výstava představila také fotografie od jiných autorů stejného námětu pro srovnání kvality či způsobu fotografování a doplňující písemné a obrazové dokumenty. Výstava a katalog, který k ní byl vydán, mají také kritickou funkci. Fotografie významných historických událostí svým obsahem obvykle zastiňují obrazové kvality snímků – nové zhodnocení představeného souboru děl Josefa Sudka však i ve srovnání s jinými autory prokazuje, že u tohoto autora převažuje naopak hloubka a kvalita samotných fotografických obrazů. Ty charakterizuje citlivé osobní zaujetí fotografa-umělce složitým námětem.

The exhibition presented for the very first time an, until then virtually unknown and unexhibited, collection of photographs made by Josef Sudek (1896–1976) in 1945 which documented the damage done to Prague during the tempest of the Second World War. The collection contains nearly four hundred images which capture the destroyed cultural sites of the capital city and its transformed cityscape. The photographs were found and restored only due to the complex processing of a part of Sudek’s estate, which left both the positives and the negatives stored at the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, working under the auspices of the NAKI II project. The exhibition also presented photographs of similar themes from other authors in order to compare their quality and manner, and also offered accompanying textual and visual documentation. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue also serve a critical function. The photographs of notable historical events usually obfuscate the artistic qualities of the image in favour of the content – the new valuation of the presented collection however testifies to the fact that, in comparison to other authors, Josef Sudek always achieved a level of depth and quality in the images themselves. They are saturated with the photographer-artist’s sensitive and personal interest in approaching a very difficult theme.
