The study focuses on extreme precipitation in the Vosges Mountains (VG) and the Ore Mountains (KH), two
low mountain ranges in central part of Europe. The Weather Extremity Index (WEI) was employed for daily
precipitation totals from 168 meteorological stations in VG and 167 stations in KH. The WEI enabled to select
54 most intense extreme precipitation events (EPEs) in KH and VG. Several characteristics of the EPEs were
investigated in the paper. The results demonstrated that the EPEs lasted mostly 1–2 days in both regions,
whereas they affected a smaller part of VG as compared to KH. Stationary fronts occurred most frequently
during EPEs in VG, while cyclones in KH. Most of the cyclones in KH during EPEs originated from cold air
cut-off process and they often had Vb track from Mediterranean towards the north-east. Even during the fifth
strongest EPE in VG, the extreme precipitation was related to Vb low, this time strongly deflected westwards.
