Kniha se zabývá osudy jednoho z nejvzácnějších rukopisů, který je uložen na území České republiky. Pod signaturou Cim 2 je v knihovně pražské metropolitní kapituly chován bohatě iluminovaný evangeliář, který vznikl na sklonku karolinské periody, přibližně v závěru 70. let. 9. století. Tento rukopis dosud neměl monografii a i v odborné literatuře, ač dobře známý, se pohybuje na okraji zájmu. Kniha se pokouší tuto mezeru zaplnit. Reviduje dosavadní názory a snaží se nalézt odpovědi na pro kodex zásadní otázky. Zejména je nově řešena enigmatické otázka vzniku rukopisu, na němž pracovalo několik iluminátorů různého školení: franko-saští ornamentalisté, snad remeští figuralisté, a písaři pocházející ze saského Corvey. Komplexního rozboru se dočkala i pozoruhodná ikonografie se scénami povolání apoštolů. Zcela nově je analyzována vazba kodexu, včetně slonovinové destičky na přední desce a hedvábné textilie na přídeští. Také otázka příchodu rukopisu do Čech je zde zevrubně probrána. Také dosud nebyly zkoumány osudy rukopisu v pražské katedrále a jeho případná funkce v rámci svatovítského pokladu, kde byl uložen až do 19. století.

This book follows the fortunes of one of the most valuable manuscripts to be preserved in the Czech Republic. In the library of the Prague Metropolitan Chapter, under the shelf mark Cim 2, there is to be found a lavishly illuminated evangeliary, which was produced towards the end of the Carolingian era, roughly in the late 870s. Until now no monograph had been devoted to this manuscript, and, although it is well known, it had remained on the margins of interest in the specialist literature. This book attempts to fill this gap. It reconsiders previous views and attempts to find answers to questions that are of fundamental importance in relation to the codex. In particular, a fresh look is taken at the enigmatic question of the origin of the manuscript, on which a number of illuminators worked, coming from various schools: Franco-Saxon ornamentalists, figure painters who perhaps came from Rheims, and scribes from Corvey in Saxony. The remarkable iconography with scenes of the calling of the apostles at last also receives a comprehensive analysis. For the first time the binding of the codex is examined in complexity, including the small ivory plates on the front board and the silk fabric on the inside of the boards. The question of how the manuscript came to be in the Czech lands is also dealt with in detail. Other issues examined here for the first time are the fortunes of the manuscript in the Prague Cathedral and the function it may have had in the St. Vitus’s treasury, where it was kept until the 19th century.
