The article deals with the metalanguage behavior observed in a group of Turkish families recently settled in Prague. It builds on Language Management Theory, which integrates the various forms of language management arising from the fact that the family is an organized social institution as well as an environment of everyday interaction. The article is based on data originating in observations, semi-structured interviews with mothers of focus families and experimental interactions of mothers, children and the researcher. The analysis of the data suggests that multiple language norms govern the different domains of language use in focus families. While the first norm requires that Turkish is used as it is used in speech communities which mothers relate themselves to, the second norm allows that features originating in other languages are used along or instead of Turkish. The existence of multiple norms explains the existence of two respective patterns of language management processes which the focus families developed in the multilingual setting. While the first pattern of language management relates to the multilingual setting as a certain complication for the first language acquisition; in the second pattern the positive effect of the multilingual setting on acquiring languages relevant in the local context is underlined and supported.
