In general, electrophoretic separations cannot be carried out only with basic "bare fused silica"
capillaries. In order to reduce the chemical activity of the surface, or because of the targeted influence of
the electroosmotic flow, the surface of the capillaries is often modified. These treatments include acid or
alkaline washing of the capillary to affect the surface charge or direct chemical bonding of the appropriate
    compounds (Si-C phase, C18, butyl-phenyl, cholesterol, polyvinyl-alcohol, dimethylpolysiloxane,
polyethylene, PEG etc.). Almost in all cases, these modification are performed on the original, perfectly
    smooth surface.
