The paper focuses on nest survival, particularly in relation to the nest predation, in both continuous and fragmented forest of Papua New Guinea, where patterns of nest predation are still largely unexplored. Observed depredation rates are based on substantial sample of natural nests together with experimental artificial nests. Additional use of nest cameras provided
a preliminary overview of the main nest predators. A validity of experimental nests was tested, i.e. whether they provide a true proximate of natural nests and represent a useful tool for surveying nest predation. Experimental approach was further applied for exploring differences in depredation rate between fragmented and continuous forest. Forest fragmentation may alter the composition of nest predators and induce shifts in nest survival rates.
