The conference took a new and much needed angle to the experience of Jews under communism by moving beyond state policy and shifts to examine the ways in which Jews found creative opportunities to develop and express their religious or secular Jewish identities in the context of state communism, even when the state was hostile to those expressions. Its aim was to shift from a perspective in which Jews are objects of communist policies to one which explores Jewish subjectivity and creativity in communist Europe after World War II and the Holocaust.
Moreover, the conference examined Jewish history from a transnational vantage point, in other words, moving across the so-called Iron Curtain. This challenges a dominant historiographic paradigm by questioning the Soviet-centric perspective regnant in most work on the subject and shows the wide variety of Jewish experiences in both law and culture among communist states and even within single countries. By focusing on networks, rather than states, across east-central Europe and the forms of identity open to Jews in this time period, this conference offered a rethinking of Jewish social and cultural life under communism.
