The participants of the conference tackled a specific side of marginality: alcohol consumption, violence, drug addiction, vagrancy, madness and prostitution. These themes shed light on a number of issues. They provide a glimpse into the side-effects of modernization, usually intended as a positive outcome, nuancing this process by depicting the life and realities of those left out of the gains of modernity or marginalized due to changed conceptions of “normality”
