Článek shrnuje současné poznatky o savčí a lidské epifýze a jejím hormonu melatoninu. Soustředí se na strukturu a funkci epifýzy, biochemii a fyziologii melatoninu, účinek světla na cirkadiánní rytmus v tvorbě melatoninu, vztah mezi melatoninem a tělesnými funkcemi a v neposlední řadě na možné užití melatoninu v lékařství.

The article summarizes current knowledge on the mammalian and human pineal gland and its hormone melatonin. It concentrates on structure and function of the pineal gland, biochemistry and physiology of melatonin, effect of light on the circadian rhythm in melatonin production, relationship between melatonin and bodily functions and last but not least on usage of melatonin in medicine.
