Whistler-mode chorus wave observations from the EMFISIS instrument on the dual spacecraft Van Allen Probes mission are reported during periods of close separation. In particular, we focus on time intervals where the spacecraft are located close to the chorus source region, within a few degrees of the magnetic equator. Case studies of multi-point observations of individual chorus wave elements and multi-element structures are presented. Inferring the integral wave power and/or amplitude of these lower and upper band chorus waves permits the calculation of linear correlation coefficients. This analysis allows for the spatial extent, or characteristic length scale, of the chorus source region to be estimated in the directions both perpendicular and parallel to the background magnetic field. The results of this analysis are subsequently compared to previously published estimates for these length scales. Additionally, we investigate the time period over which correlations are calculated, and consider how this might affect estimates of characteristic length scales.
