Use of probiotic seems to be very interesting and promising strategy for solve the problems with imbalance of the gut microbiota which may subsequently lead to various disorders including allergies. Lactobacillus genera is currently the most incorporated bacteria in probiotic products. The precise mechanism by which lactobacilli interact with the gut bacteria of the host immune cells and adhere to the host surfaces are still under investigation. It was shown before that the mixture of three lactobacilli (Lmix) (Lactobacillus (L.) rhamnosus LOCK 0900, L. rhamnosus LOCK 0908 and L. casei LOCK 0919) have synergistic effect in induction of anti-allergic and regulatory cytokines in human whole blood cell culture. Pilot study carried out by Cukrowska (unpublished data) showed that administration of the mixture of lactobacillus to children presenting the first symptoms of allergy reduced the serum levels of IgE and IL-5 and also reduced the severity of disease. Here we assessed the chemical and immunomodulatory characterization of L.casei LOCK 0919.
