The themed issue compiles 13 original peer-reviewed papers (prepared by >50 authors from 15 countries), which are addressing the problem of cyanobacterial water blooms and cyanotoxins. Twelve original research articles present major accomplishments of the research conducted within the EU COST action “CYANOCOST”, covering 1) new reports on occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial species and toxins, 2) new methods for cyanotoxin detection, 3) environmental distribution of cyanotoxins and dynamics of their production,4) occurrence and removal of cyanotoxins from drinking water, and related human health impacts. Finally, there is an overview article written by leading scientists summarizing recent developments, state-of-the-art, existing gaps in knowledge as well as future research directions in the research of toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins.
