The microfibrillar composite (MFC) concept has a good potential to get biodegradable materials with enhanced performance. However, in many cases, systems incapable of thermoplastic processing applied in the form of drawn blend-based ribbons have been reported. Here, membranes and films can be prepared by careful compression molding of knitted ribbons. The MFC concept has also been used for preparation of PLA microfibres by matrix extraction from the drawn product. At the same time, limited drawability and unstable extrusion do not allow MFC preparation from some suitable biodegradable blends. The complex improvement of the PCL/PLA system by nanofillers indicates good applicability of nanoparticles to modify biodegradable polymers-based MFC resulting in dual reinforcement and improvement of drawability. Increased PLA crystallinity during subsequent processing and practical elimination of cold crystallization is another advantage of the MFC concept in the PCL/PLA system.
