A male participant sustained a rounded back vowel [u:] or [o:] at a comfortable pitch and loudness, and phonated into a silicone "Lax vox" tube submerged 2 cm in water. High speed laryngoscopy was performed with a rigid scope. Oral airpressure (Poral) was registered in mouthpiece through which the endoscope was inserted in the larynx. EGG was recored. Results of the participant were compared with those from a physical model of phonation, consisting of silicone vocal folds, and a plexiglas vocal tract in the setting for [u:].
CQ increased, both derived from EGG and glottal area, while negative glottal area derivative and NAQ (from area) decreased for phonation into water. Results from modelling were in line with those obtained from human.
Water resistance therapy does not seem to increase vocal fold loading even if CQ increase and NAQ decrease suggest a more pressed phonation. CQ from EGG corresponds to that of area, but CQ does not seem to be a reliable estimate of impact stress.
