Since first released in the late seventies the International Reference Ionosphere model has been compared with new ground and space data and as a result has been steadily improved over the past decades, keeping pace with the ever increasing volume of ionospheric data and the improvements in mathematical modelling techniques. We will review the multitude of studies that have validated the IRI model through comparisons with almost all of the different data sources that exist for the ionospheric plasma and will discuss and attempt to quantify the resulting improvement process. The critical role of communitywide assessments of ionospheric models will be discussed and some exampled will be presented.

IRI is a widely used model with many applications not only in space physics but also in space engineering, university education and public outreach. We will review some of these applications and present statistics for the IRI usage, including the endorsements from various international organizations (COSPAR, URSI, ITU, ISO). An outlook will be given on what is coming next for IRI including the exciting new developments towards a Real-Time IRI.
