    Nanomaterials have become widely used not only in various industrial fields but also in consumer products. Thus, possible negative health effects impact not only professionals, but also general populationo. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of genotoxicity of nanomaterials is imperative to avoid application of materials with properties that negatively affect cellular functions. To reveal such properties, analyzes of gene expression changes in model systems, preferably in vivo animal models, upon exposure to nanomaterials are conducted. In this article, we report the results of a review of literature concerning gene expression changes in mice exposed to nanoparticles. Using keywords „gene expression“, „mice“, „nanoparticles“ we identified 25 studies that analyzed the effect of nine types of nanoparticles. Titanium dioxide, silver and gold were the most commonly studied ones. Vast majority of studies detected negative changes in mice upon exposure to nanoparticles. They primarily included alterations of expression of genes related to oxidative stress response and inflammation, although other pathways ( apoptosis, cell cycleregulation, metabolism, cell differentiation or cell proliferation) were also affected. Interestingly, the changes were even for those nanoparticles, that are considered biologically safe (i.e. titanium dioxide, or gold). These observations underline the fact that nanomaterials should require thorough testing before they are approved for general application in consumer products.
