Many cancers often arise from cells unable to maintain genomic and chromosomal instability. Recurrent chromosomal aberrations (CAs) arise through a clonal growth of cells with specific translocations, deletions or amplifications of chromosomal regions or whole chromosomes and many specific CAs are causative events in malignant transformation. In our studies we compared frequencies of CAs in patients with incident lung, breast and colorectal cancer. Additionally, we have also searched for genetic background that modulates chromosomal instability in humans. The DNA repair characteristics have been discussed as well.
