Kniha vychází jako další svazek knižnice Korespondence T. G. Masaryka. Uvádí ji monografická studie V. Doubka a L. Merhautové „Skepse a naděje. Formování a prosazování reformního modernismu“. Ukazuje, že léta 1893–1895, zachycená v následné edici korespondence, byla pro oba protagonisty obdobím proměn a zásadních prací, které byly ovlivňovány vzájemnou interakcí. Machar žil ve Vídni a Masaryk v Praze, vzájemné přátelství se proto utvářelo právě prostřednictvím dopisů, jejichž frekvence rychle stoupala, osobních setkání bylo v prvních letech minimum. Výsledky výzkumu vycházejí zejména z poznatků z nově získané vzájemné korespondence T. G. Masaryka a J. S. Machara, a to 183 dokumentů z let 1893–1895, které jsou v knize editovány a opatřeny rozsáhlým poznámkovým aparátem. Tato část zahrnuje též ediční úvod, seznam editovaných dokumentů a anotovaný osobní rejstřík. Práci doplňuje obrazová příloha a uzavírá ji anglické resumé.

The book is another volume in “T.G. Masaryk’s Correspondence”. This is introduced by a monograph by V. Doubek and L. Merhautová “Scepticism and Hope. Formation of the Foundations of Reformist Modernism”. It shows that, for both Masaryk and Machar, the years 1893–1895 covered by the edition of their correspondence were the years of changes and key works that were influenced by their interaction. Their friendship was formed through letters, the frequency of which was growing fast, since Machar lived in Vienna while Masaryk lived in Prague and there were only few face-to-face meetings in the early years. The research and its achievements draw mainly upon the newly acquired correspondence of T.G. Masaryk and J.S. Machar comprising 183 documents dating back to 1893–1895 that are edited and extensively annotated. This part includes an editor´s note, a list of edited documents and an annotated index of names. The publication includes an illustrated supplement and a summary in English.
