Geopolymers are new construction materials with a wide range of applications. They exhibit good resistance to high temperatures and are potentially resistant to ionizing radiation. Thanks to these properties, geopolymers could be used in the nuclear industry as filling material, protective layers, or instead of concrete based on Portland cements. This paper describes an initial radiation characterization study of selected geopolymer samples and raw materials in a mixed neutron-gamma field. The samples were irradiated in the LVR-15 nuclear research reactor and concentrations of radiation-significant elements were evaluated via the neutron activation analysis method. For needs of future decommissioning of nuclear facilities and disposal of radioactive waste, attention was primarily paid to the elements from which radionuclides with a long half-life and high gamma ray energy originate. These experiments can help select suitable initial raw materials for geopolymer materials for nuclear industry applications. The long-term goal of these studies is to create a database of raw materials for production of geopolymers with different properties such as shielding materials or materials with resistance to radiation exposure or induced activities.
