Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most devastating diseases that affects patients and their families for the rest of their lives. Among many treatments being developed for SCI, the placement of different types of grafts embedded with cell populations into areas of damage has been one of the most commonly used
regenerative approaches ,attracting scientists and physicians for the last 15 years. Stem/stromal cells are able to secrete a large repertoire of signaling molecules, including anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, which may modulate the inhibitory environment of SCI while increasing trophic support to the resident cells. The chapter describes the pathology of spinal cord injury, the use of mesenchymal stromal cells derived from different sources in the treatment of SCI and their potential modifications and manipulations to reinforce their paracrine effect on neural tissue regeneration.
