Kapitola se věnuje přehledu integračních teorií. Dosavadním největším producentem integračních teorií byly USA jako země s dlouhodobě vysokými migračními saldy, kde integrační problematika byla palčivější, než v Evropě. Přestože integrační, asimilační či akulturační teorie vzniklé v USA vycházejí z evropského myšlení a jsou ovlivněny dobovou evropskou psychologií, sociologií a dalšími vědami, působí na ně též i okolnost, že integraci do imigračních skupin měří na americkém kontinentě skupiny, které jsou samy imigranty nebo jejich potomky. Přestože řada amerických integračních konceptů je pro evropské prostředí komplikovaně použitelná, kapitola ukazuje, že v oblasti integrace existuje více než stoletá teoreticky zpracovávaná zkušenost, která se vyvíjí od představy, že skupiny v kontaktu si mechanicky předávají kulturní statky, až splynou navzájem, k poznání, že koexistence skupin v kontaktu může nabývat řady podob a často neústí ve splynutí skupin. Vývoj v oblasti integrace jsme schopni za stávajících možností společenských věd popsat a interpretovat, ale neumíme ho predikovat. V oblasti interpretace chování skupin v kontaktu kapitola reflektuje poznání, že společenské procesy v diverzifikované společnosti nesměřují ke stejnorodosti, ale k různým přeměnám diverzity. Diverzitu ve společnosti složené z mnoha kultur je efektivní vnímat jako její průvodní a relativně permanentní vlastnost. Kapitola by měla ukázat, že adaptační procesy v novém prostředí jsou dlouhodobé, často mnohogenerační, a neprobíhají lineárně.

The book chapter is focused on integration theories. The US, as a country with a long-term migration balance, has so far been the largest producer of integration theories due to the fact that integration issues were more acute there than in Europe. Although integration, assimilation and acculturation theories which originated in the US are based on European thinking and are influenced by contemporary European psychology, sociology, and other sciences, they are also affected by the fact that integration into immigrant groups on the American continent is measured by groups of researchers who themselves are immigrants or their descendants. Although a number of American integration concepts are hardly applicable in Europe, the chapter shows that there is more than a hundred-year theoretically processed experience with integration which has been evolving from the idea that groups in contact transmit their cultural goods mechanically until they merge completely and gradually comes to the knowledge that coexistence of groups in contact can take many forms and often it does not lead to their fusion. With the current possibilities of social sciences we are able to describe and interpret the development in the field of integration, but we cannot predict it. The development in the area of interpretation of the behaviour of groups in contact reflects the knowledge that social processes in a diversified society do not lead to uniformity, but to various transformations of diversity. It is an effective way to perceive diversity in a society composed of many cultures as its accompanying and permanent feature. The chapter shows that adaptation processes in the new environment are long-term, often multi-generational, and do not run linearly.
